Verbrec Ltd is proud to be the industry partner in a transformative National Industry PhD Award program, in partnership with the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ). This groundbreaking initiative aims to develop innovative gasification processes, enabling the conversion of coal and biomass into sustainable low-carbon fuels. By minimising waste, improving efficiency, and advancing carbon capture and utilisation, the program supports Australia’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
As part of this collaboration, Verbrec reaffirms its commitment to decarbonising the mining industry, aligning with its strategic priorities. This partnership marks a significant milestone in Verbrec’s efforts to pioneer transformative changes in energy production and resource utilisation.
“This project will solve the inefficiencies, environmental impacts, and economic challenges in converting coal and biomass into sustainable liquid fuels,” said Associate Professor Lei Ge. “Current gasification technologies often produce significant waste and emissions while being economically unviable. Establishing an effective conversion process to enhance the quality of fuel produced from this process is pivotal for facilitating its integration into the market as a viable transportation fuel.”
Insights from Fred Zamiri, PhD Awardee and Process Manager
Fred Zamiri, Process Manager at Verbrec and awardee of the National Industry PhD, expressed his enthusiasm for the program:
“I am thrilled to announce that my application for the Industry PhD Program at the University of Southern Queensland has been approved for government funding.”
The goal is to produce a sustainable mix of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), e-Methanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF), Hydrogen, Ammonia, and clean power generation. This project contributes to both decarbonising the Australian mining industry and advancing the waste-to-energy sector.
Benefits of the Research Project
The research project promises a range of benefits, including:
– Waste Reduction: Developing processes to minimise the waste generated during gasification.
– Efficiency Enhancement: Creating innovative solutions to optimise energy production.
– Carbon Emission Mitigation: Capturing and utilising emissions to produce sustainable fuels.
– Market Integration: Facilitating the adoption of low-carbon fuels as viable alternatives for transportation and energy.
This collaboration not only aligns with global efforts to address climate change but also reinforces Verbrec’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. By leveraging advanced technologies and fostering industry-academic partnerships, Verbrec and UniSQ are paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
