Beyond first gas: What comes next for the Northern Territory’s energy infrastructure

The timing of NT Resources Week 2026 was significant.

On 1 September, commissioning began on the first gas from the Beetaloo Basin’s Shenandoah South Pilot Project. The milestone saw Beetaloo gas enter the Northern Territory pipeline network through APA’s newly constructed Sturt Plateau Pipeline, connecting into the Amadeus Gas Pipeline.

After more than a decade of exploration and development, it marked an important shift for the Territory: from resource potential towards the infrastructure, markets and capability required to support development at scale.

That shift provided an important backdrop to NT Resources Week, reinforcing the relevance of the conversations around what comes next for the Territory’s energy sector.

For Verbrec Managing Director & CEO Mark Read and the Verbrec team attending the event, four themes stood out.

  • The constraint is the ecosystem, not the rock

One of the clearest messages was that developing resources is only part of the challenge.

Speakers highlighted the cost and time premiums associated with operating in a remote and still-developing region, from transporting materials over long distances to accessing specialist services when they are needed.

These constraints also point to an opportunity. Building deeper local capability across engineering, operations, maintenance, logistics, fabrication and specialist services can improve responsiveness and help reduce the cost of development.

More broadly, the Territory’s ability to support future energy and industrial growth will depend not only on the resources available, but on the capability and supply chains that develop around them.

  • Infrastructure enables development; it does not simply follow it

A strong reflection from the discussions was that infrastructure needs to be considered as an enabler of development, not something that comes only after demand is established.

Craig de Laine, CEO of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG), pointed to the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline as a useful precedent. Extending almost 1,600 kilometres through Western Australia, it is an example of large-scale north-to-south gas infrastructure connecting resources with major demand centres.

The broader point is that Australia has built this kind of nation-building infrastructure before. For the Northern Territory major energy infrastructure can help create development opportunities rather than simply respond to them.

That principle is already visible in projects underway today.

Verbrec is currently delivering Power and Water Corporation’s $21 million McArthur River Pipeline Bi-Directional Upgrade, increasing flexibility within the Territory’s gas network and supporting future gas supply from the Beetaloo Basin.

Verbrec has operated and maintained gas pipeline infrastructure in the Territory for more than a decade, giving our teams a practical perspective on the importance of reliable, well-planned infrastructure as energy networks evolve.

  • Look south as well as east

Another takeaway was the need to look beyond the more commonly discussed eastern market pathways.

South Australia’s high share of renewable generation reinforces the importance of firm and flexible gas supply, while Whyalla and the broader industrial corridor represent significant sources of energy demand.

This raises an important question for future infrastructure planning: whether stronger connections south should form part of the longer-term picture alongside eastern pathways.

Greater connectivity to multiple demand centres could improve flexibility, strengthen energy security and create more options as Australia’s energy system evolves.

  • Carbon capture is moving from concept to scope

Carbon capture and storage was another area where the scale of activity underway in the Territory stood out.

Projects associated with Middle Arm, Bonaparte CCS and Ichthys LNG, together with Vopak’s proposed CO₂ import terminal, point to the emergence of a broader CO₂ handling industry in the Northern Territory.

That requires more than storage. Compression, pipelines, metering, controls and long-term monitoring all become part of the equation, bringing CCS firmly into the realm of infrastructure, engineering and long-term operations.

From resource potential to an energy system

First gas from the Beetaloo is an important milestone, but the broader discussions in Darwin pointed to what comes next.

The opportunity for the Northern Territory will depend on more than individual resources or projects. It will require infrastructure that connects supply with markets, stronger local capability and networks that can adapt as energy needs change.
